Genesis 9 Chapter Commentary: God’s Covenant Between Him and Noah

This chapter focuses on the mark of God’s covenant between him and Noah by means of a rainbow. It also brings us to Noah and his family together with the creatures saved by him after the flood.

With God’s blessing, Noah and his family departed the ark once the deluge had receded. He commanded them to procreate and bear fruit to replenish the planet. Additionally, he granted them control over all land animals, including birds and fish. However, God forbade Noah from consuming human blood or that of other animals.

When the ground was dry, Noah started farming. He first planted a vineyard and made drinking wine. One time, when he drank wine and got drunk, he slept naked. Ham, his youngest son, saw him and told his brothers about it. So, Shem and Japheth covered their father’s naked body while looking away. When Noah woke and learned about what happened, he cursed Ham.

What’s the Main Point?

God made man to rule the earth, and that animals would fear man. He blessed Noah and his sons and commanded them to increase in number and fill the earth. Also, God promised that he would never completely eradicate all life on Earth again.

What Can We Learn from This Chapter?

This chapter teaches lessons about the relationship of God and man. These takeaway lessons are still applicable up to this time.

Lesson 1: God is true to his promise.  When God established the covenant with Noah, He said that he wouldn’t curse the land and his people ever again. God is in charge. He chooses what to do based on His own will. On the other hand, Noah didn’t complain to God as he put all his trust in Him. Also, he knew that he couldn’t bargain with God.

As God’s children, we ought to put our faith in this promise and ask for God’s mercy. When we believe that we have failed God because of the sins we have committed or the awful things that have occurred in our life, we frequently tend to turn away from him. But it shouldn’t be the case because God is our guide, and he is the light towards the path of salvation.

Lesson 2: Noah was very righteous, but he was not perfect. This chapter also reveals that even Noah himself awkwardly made a careless mistake. He got drunk and fell asleep naked. This was probably because he didn’t know the idea of becoming drunk at that time, as it was the first time when he tried drinking wine.

Thank you, Heavenly Father, for the gift of vine. Make us fruitful so that we can become missionaries to share your Word. May everyone partake in the gift of the Vine of Life that Your Son Jesus gave on the cross. Amen.
