Genesis 45 Chapter Commentary: Joseph’s Revelation

When Judah offered to take Benjamin’s place as a servant, Joseph finally revealed his identity to his brothers. He reassured them not to be afraid or feel guilty for what they had done to him, as it was God’s plan for him to go to Egypt and save his family’s lives.

Joseph then instructed his brothers to return to their father and inform him that Joseph was alive. He also told them to gather their belongings and bring their entire family to Egypt to live with him and have enough food for the remaining years of famine.

After some time, the Pharaoh became aware of Joseph’s family and invited him to bring them to Egypt. The Pharaoh even provided wagons to transport the women and children and to carry Joseph’s elderly father.

Just before his brothers left for Israel, Joseph gave them numerous gifts and clothing items. Benjamin, who shared the same mother as Joseph, received the most gifts out of all the brothers.

Upon their return to Canaan, Israel was astonished to hear that Joseph was still alive. When the wagons arrived to take him to Egypt, Israel was overjoyed and expressed his desire to see his long-lost son before he passed away.

What’s the Main Point?

Joseph tells his brothers who he is in Genesis 45. They were initially frightened, but Joseph eased their fears by assuring them that he had been sent by God to Egypt. Rejoicing, Joseph’s brothers go to tell their father that he is alive.
