Schoolwork has become more than just pencils and paper. With the advancement of the home computer, many new curricula have come to the educational market. I have always been a little leary of using the computer for home education subjects. Why? Because, while I heart my computer, I am a book-in-hand type of gal.
My three older kiddos and I were given a trial membership of Time 4 Learning. In a few words, it is “Fun online learning. . . ” Like I said, I like using books for learning, not computers, so I had a biased view coming in to this program. After letting my children use it for a while I have a healthy respect for the computer’s use in a home education environment.
Besides the fact that I am amazed at how my three- and five-year-olds can aptly use my laptop, I appreciated how well Time 4 Learning drew them into an enjoyable learning experience. They were so engaged in the Math and Language Arts portions. While it was all a little over my two-year-old son’s head, he loved watching big sisters’ while they learned counting or shapes.
Here is the run-down on what Time 4 Learning is:
- Designed as “Homeschool Curriculum, After School Learning, Summer Use For PreSchool, Elementary, & Middle School Students“
- It uses educational teaching games to relay important educational concepts for Language Arts, Math, Science, and Social Studies
- Can adjust reading and math skills to match each individiual child
- Can be used as a core curriculum or as a supplement to what you already use
- Each child has their own account which is controlled by the parent. The parent can track the child’s progress and view what their child has been learning.
- Priced at $19.95 a month for first child and $14.95 monthly for additional child(ren)
I think this program would be extremely helpful for a child who does not learn well in the traditional book sense. Some children are more visual, hands on learners and Time 4 Learning definitely fits that bill with visually pleasing graphics. My middle daughter enjoyed the game where counting seed packets and matching them with the correct number was the main focus. A game where you matched items together correctly was fun for both older daughters.
While the program is a bit pricey, it would be well worth it to consider how much you are actually spending on your current language arts, math, science, and social studies curricula. If you really want to incorporate the computer into your homeschool, this may be a good way for you start.

I hope to be able to update this review as we continue to explore its many options.
