Time 4 Learning – Week of Reviews

Schoolwork has become more than just pencils and paper. With the advancement of the home computer, many new curricula have come to the educational market. I have always been a little leary of using the computer for home education subjects. Why? Because, while I heart my computer, I am a book-in-hand type of gal.

My three older kiddos and I were given a trial membership of Time 4 Learning. In a few words, it is “Fun online learning. . . ” Like I said, I like using books for learning, not computers, so I had a biased view coming in to this program. After letting my children use it for a while I have a healthy respect for the computer’s use in a home education environment.

Besides the fact that I am amazed at how my three- and five-year-olds can aptly use my laptop, I appreciated how well Time 4 Learning drew them into an enjoyable learning experience. They were so engaged in the Math and Language Arts portions. While it was all a little over my two-year-old son’s head, he loved watching big sisters’ while they learned counting or shapes.

Here is the run-down on what Time 4 Learning is:

  • Designed as “Homeschool Curriculum, After School Learning, Summer Use For PreSchool, Elementary, & Middle School Students
  • It uses educational teaching games to relay important educational concepts for Language Arts, Math, Science, and Social Studies
  • Can adjust reading and math skills to match each individiual child
  • Can be used as a core curriculum or as a supplement to what you already use
  • Each child has their own account which is controlled by the parent. The parent can track the child’s progress and view what their child has been learning.
  • Priced at $19.95 a month for first child and $14.95 monthly for additional child(ren)

I think this program would be extremely helpful for a child who does not learn well in the traditional book sense. Some children are more visual, hands on learners and Time 4 Learning definitely fits that bill with visually pleasing graphics. My middle daughter enjoyed the game where counting seed packets and matching them with the correct number was the main focus. A game where you matched items together correctly was fun for both older daughters.

While the program is a bit pricey, it would be well worth it to consider how much you are actually spending on your current language arts, math, science, and social studies curricula. If you really want to incorporate the computer into your homeschool, this may be a good way for you start.

For more information, please visit Time 4 Learning.

I hope to be able to update this review as we continue to explore its many options.

On Why TXU Has Lost Our Business

Warning: Italics used quite often. Please forgive.

I was so good, y’all, about opening up windows and keeping things turned off last month. I followed everyone around and harped on gently reminded those who forgot to turn off the lights when they left the room. I did everything except for taking cold showers.

Really, people, I have to draw the line somewhere.

Anyways. So, we get our last bill and were pleasantly pleased to see how low our wattage usage was.

Yay us!

We looked up towards the dreaded Payment Due area and I seriously considered fainting.

The payment, according the wattage, should have been about $92. Pretty good, huh?

How’s about $400?

Yes, you read that right.

I’ll take a break while you faint. Here, have some water.

Anyways, my sweet hubby calls up and after speaking to someone in India for over an hour with no results, he asks to speak to her supervisor. He is put on hold. For an hour.

Turns out, our contract expired in May. In May. Not October. And they decide to set us up on some plan where they estimate our bill. All this, of course, without our knowledge.

How kind of them.

While he goes back and forth for another half hour with the supervisor, the young man tells my husband in the voice of one who is so happy to bestow some mercy on us poor unsuspecting customers, that he will gladly give us $50 off of our next bill. Fifty dollars. Off of our next bill.

Again. How kind of them.

So, TXU, next time you want to steamroll a customer who has paid their bills on time for over a year and a half, I suggest you at least send flowers. At least a card.

One 2 Believe Nativity Set – Monday Review

It is that time of year when many people pull out their nativities. We received the Tales of Glory Nativity Set from One 2 Believe to review and it seems fitting to review it so very close to Christmas.

Here are the nitty gritty details, with my own personal thoughts following.

  • The set comes with seventeen pieces, including a stable.
  • Designed for little ones, aged 3 and up.
  • Includes a tiny storybook, in several languages.

Okay, so, I was not really impressed with this set. To be fair, I really am not crazy about nativity sets in the first place. Because of this viewpoint I chose to review the product on quality and safety.

The characters in the set are made of PVC. PVC has been linked to cancer and birth defects and I really have a problem with toys being made from them. A plastic that is safe would have been a better choice.

The star on the stable broke off within a day and is not fixable. My kids were not throwing the stable around or standing on it or using undue roughness. The star falling off became a huge choking hazard and had to be tossed.

The characters are cheesy looking. I’m all up for fun looking toys in moderation, but when baby Jesus looks like He is 15 . . . However, the goofy-looking donkey did make me laugh.

I can always use a good laugh.

The price is a bit unreasonable. $24.99 is not a good price for a product that lacks quality. Maybe $14.99 would be a bit easier for families to swallow.

I don’t want to give a totally bad review. This set is not for my family. This doesn’t mean that it another family might not get a big kick out of it. The price may not be a hindrance. I encourage you to check out the review from my other Crewmates and get their viewpoints.

See you next Monday for Monday review.

Media Angels – Monday Review

It is not often that I am able to pick up a book to read for funsies any more. Usually my reading material focuses on the spiritual or physical well-being of my family. When I received The Missing Link: Found in my mailbox, I was more than ready to sit down with a cup of joe and melt into the land of fiction if even for just a few minutes.

The book was obviously written for teens. This can make it hard for an adult to review. Written by then-seventeen-year-old Christina Gerwitz, her lack of experience leads to the overuse of adjectives in the story as well as the unbelievability of some of the story line. At first, this kept me from wanting to go further into reading the book.

I prefer to finish a book once I start reading it. And I am glad that I finished this one. What started out as difficult to read turned into a pretty good story, especially when considering the age of the author.

This story follows brother and sister, Anna and Christian, and their father, Dr. Jack Murphy, as they uncover the mystery surrounding the finding of the supposed “Missing Link.” As the story progresses, one finds that they are learning arguments from both sides of the Evolution and Creation viewpoints. This makes this story more than the average teen book.

The story continues and you often find the children and their father petitioning our Heavenly Father in prayer. Written from a Christian perspective, you will not have to worry about inappropriate language. The children are homeschooled and are part of a family that has more than the usual American family’s two children.

And frankly, I find that quite refreshing.

This story presents an interesting, easy read for Christian teens and blends together fiction and actual facts. By clicking here you can read more about the story and the author behind it. I also suggest you visit the website Media Angels for other books in the series as well as resources for home education.

As with anything, I do encourage you to research for yourself the facts presented in this book.

I'm Getting Older, or My Birthday

Tuesday was my birthday and it was pretty great. I got some gifts that I wasn’t expecting. In fact, I am typing on one of the gifts at this very moment.

Yep. A new ‘puter.

Pretty cool, eh?

And the battery lasts more than two point seven seconds so I envision quiet evenings at the local Starbucks all by my lonesome.

Think it will happen?

Nah, me neither. But boy, it sure is nice to dream.

Anyways.

I bet y’all cannot guess how old I am. Can you? Hint: I am older than 25 and less than 45. Does that help?

My hubby took the day off in honor of my birthday and that was probably the best birthday gift of all. He also took me shopping. How fun is that?

My daughter, when asked how old she thought I was, replied “You are sixty.”

I am not sixty.

I was able to realize how wonderful friendship is after all the great birthday wishes I got on Facebook. That was truly a blessing. And the phone calls made my day even that more special.

So, to end this total random post, I had a great day and my family and you wonderful friends made it even more special. Thank you!

The end.

Help Me to Teach – Monday Review

Obviously if you are reading this blog you know a little something about this here ol’ internet. As a homeschooling parent, one thing that I often utilize the world wide web for is to research topics that relate to what I am teaching my children at that specific time. It is so much easier to sit at my desk and type than driving four kiddos with me down to the local library and look through books.

I was given a three-month subscription to an internet directory called Help Me 2 Teach. Let me give you a little background on what HelpMe2Teach is all about. The aim of the site is to “make available to teachers, parents and students some of the many valuable websites on the internet as they relate to school needs.” The creator of the website, a teacher of over 40 years, has compiled a list of educational sites from the internet that range from Animals all the way to Social Studies. She even recently added a Bible Study and Creation section to the Table of Contents. You can search for different topics through the Table of Contents or through the provided search bar.

Now here are my pros and cons.

Pros:

~ Each listed site has an age button that tells you which age that specific site is geared towards:

  • P – Primary grades
  • E- Elementary grades
  • S- Secondary grades
  • T- Teacher

~ Many people might find the limited range to be safer for their children to use as a search engine. Instead of letting the kiddos go free on google and coming up with all possibilities of yucky web pages, were they to use this page, they would be confined to only educational sites.

~ For those who do not want to search through the overwhelming search results from a search engine such as Google or Yahoo, the Table of Contents allows for quicker research.

~ It is updated often. As the author/owner of the site finds newer educational resource sites, she updates and adds to the Table of Contents and alerts users with a “new!” button.

Cons

~ My biggest problem is the fact that you have to pay for the use of this site. Prices range from $4.95 for three days to $29.95 for one year. I am a person who prefers using a free search engine to locate what resources or information I need.

~ It is definitely not all inclusive. Of course, no search engine is perfect. After plugging in various key words into the search bar such as “Mozart,” “Beethoven,” and “Grandma Moses,”which we are covering in school, nothing came up at all. Had I used free search engine I would have found plenty to work with.

Each homeschooling parent is unique and due to our backgrounds and experience this site may or may not work for you. Overall, I think many of us would prefer to just use a free search engine. For those who are on a time crunch and would rather not search through a major site, this would be a wonderful resource for you.

Tune in next Monday for my next review!

Adventures at the Poll

Tuesday morning my sweet husband and I got up at five o’clock. It was voting day. A very important day in our country. Due to many scheduled meetings at work for hubby, we had to get there very early to put in our votes.

We got our precious children up at 6, got them dressed and fed, and we headed down to the school where we were to vote. We were in line at 6:22 AM. Mosquitoes were very thick. Yes. In November.

The lady in front of us had her son, about six or so, with her and he was watching a DVD on a little portable DVD player. She kindly let our little girls watch the movie and it sure helped! Baby girl would not sit quietly in the sling which was very unusual. She usually falls asleep very quickly in the sling. She eventually did fall asleep on my shoulder.

People were patient for the most part. What I couldn’t believe was when the young man who came into line behind us parked a collapsable-type hospital chair in line, went over to an electrical outlet, hooked up his portable stereo, and proceeded to blast us with whatever type music it was. Rap, maybe? Hip-hop? Then he sat down and listened to our silence being broken by the junk.

Honestly.

It really upset people. And when you are in line with a bunch of cranky people it certainly doesn’t help. Had the young man ever heard of headphones?

By the time we got to the registration tables, an even more ironic thing happened. The young man was at the wrong polling place. Oh my heavens. Yes.

We got to listen to all of that free music for nothing. He was slightly embarrassed.

Anyways, once I got to my voting booth, holding a sleeping baby in my right arm, I was thrown off by the sign that said “This is NOT a touch screen.”

Come again?

Seriously, I had to read all of the directions on the sheet to the left of me. Never has happened before, people. I usually can figure out these machines without the help of instructions.

Why did they have to throw in the little wheel thingamajig? It really threw me off. I prefer buttons.

Anyways, I proceeded to write in my presidential candidate. Yes, I am one of those whackos who wrote in who I thought the best man for the job was. Typing his name in with my non-dominate hand with a baby who suddenly weighed about 50 lbs was interesting.

Then I had to go down with the stupid wheel thingie and highlight names and press enter.

Turns out I could have voted straight-ticket and then just changed the presidential candidate part.

Boy, do I feel dumb.

Anyways, I had an inclination Obama would win. I was disappointed. God is still in control, though, and He can work His good through anyone. Even Obama.

I am sure I just lost some readership.

Oh well.

Michelle wrote a very good post on abortion. Read it. I totally agree with her.

There goes more readership.

Oh well.

I’d love to hear everyones’ experiences at the polls. What are your thoughts?

A friendly reminder

Tomorrow is Election Day. Make sure you do your part and go out and vote! My husband and I are working out the logistics of being at our polling place before 7AM with four kids five and under in tow. Should be interesting. I know a baby sling for the youngest and a backpack carrier for the two year old are definitely in order.

I just want to let everyone know that starting next Monday, November 10, I will be starting my Review Mondays. As you all know, I am part of a Focus Group with The Old Schoolhouse and I am reviewing quite a few homeschooling products. So if you want to hear my thoughts on various homeschooling resources, be sure and check back every Monday!

I really had a ton of fun with the latest giveaway I held. I enjoyed meeting so many new people and I will be sure to visit the blogs of all who entered. Just my way of saying thank you to all who stopped by.

Again, GO OUT AND VOTE, people!
