How do you beat the heat?

It is actually pretty useless to look up a weather forecast for where I am living. You know if you bring up the next five days it will look like this:

Monday – Hot and humid

Tuesday – Getting hotter, be prepared to sit in the pool all day. And humid.

Wednesday – Start adding some ice to that pool. And humid. 100%.

Thursday – Hot. Too hot. Consider moving to Alaska. 100%-frizzy-hair humidity.

Friday – You might feel better if you laid down on an iceberg. Oh, and so humid you might as well wear swimming goggles while outside.

Most of my friends and relatives and people I pretend read this blog are experiencing the same thing. I will look away as they roll their eyes at my dramatics. Admittedly the whole iceberg thing will not work. Or will it.

Pregnancy seems to add a few degrees to the actual temperature. I “beat the heat” by drinking lots of ice water and staying inside in the loveliness that is an air-conditioned home. I truly am thankful for air conditioning. What do you do to stay cool?

Playing Laundry Catch-Up for Tackle it Tuesday

I am at the point in my pregnancy where I am constantly uncomfortable.  This is the beginning of the end, where the belly grows rapidly and all of a sudden the maternity clothes do not fit like they should and a muumuu is sounding heavenly.  Because of this, I have very few items clothing-wise that fit without making my abdomen feel as if it is caught in a vise.  So my tackle for today is to catch up on all laundry so that I have some clean and comfy clothing to wear.
I have a mini-army of helpers with laundry now and the time passes by very quickly and with lots of laughter.  My two daughters are experts at folding and putting away and even my son can cram his clothes in one of his dresser drawers.  Generally the only thing I do laundry wise is stain treating and putting sheets back on the beds.  I count myself blessed!
I am off now with my very cute laundry team and a box of tissues – two of my kiddos have a bit of a cold – to conquer the laundry pile.  For more tackles, visit 5 Minutes for Mom.  If you do not have any inspiration to take on some daunting bit of housework, I am sure that you can find some there.

Hot dogs

The other day, my two darling daughters were fancying themselves to be the star characters from the story of Cinderella.  They both donned their ballerina outfits and as usual, put white, frilly socks on their hands because “Mom, I have to have gloves like Cinderella!”  My oldest daughter is Cinderella.  My youngest is the Prince.  That is just how it is and while I have never witnessed a defining moment in their conversation when they came to the agreement of who was who, it seems to be an unarguable decision.

My oldest daughter will put on some kind of classical music and she will commence her version of the waltz. Because Cinderella cannot be Cinderella unless she attends a ball.  My youngest daughter will glide in not so gracefully as “the Pwince” and will do her very best to sweep this pretend Cinderella off her feet.  She will bow as manfully as a three-year-old girl can and they will dance.  Usually this process is interrupted by brother shooting his popgun off near them and of course that results in lots of screaming and shouting just cannot happen during a ball.  At least not in the Disney version.  Not in the Rodgers and Hammerstein version either, now that I think of it.

After brother has been shooed away and the dancing can begin again, Cinderella always looks at the bell-tower clock.  It looks quite like the wall clock bought at Target over six years ago that is usually 20 minutes late.  Said clock announces to Cinderella that it is 7 o’clock.  No staying up till midnight in this house.  We are party poopers.

She exclaims with hands over her mouth and proceeds to run away.  She calls over her shoulder “It is seven o’clock.  I must get home!”

The Prince usually shouts back “but wait!  I do not even know your name!”  Usually.  Not this time.  Because my children are my children and have their parents’ weird sense of humor.  Instead I hear this “But don’t you want some hot dogs?”

Huh.  Any husbands out there out of favor with their wives?  Grill her up some hot dogs.  That will be sure to win her heart.  And I bet you were wondering what hot dogs had to do with Cinderella.

Why a new blog?

A couple of years ago I started my journey into the world of blogging. I am not sure of the reason why most people start a blog. Probably the ability to write out our thoughts behind the veil of a computer screen holds a small amount of weight to that decision. Our world likes to be easily offended when someone does not agree with us, so anonymity in any form while expressing the freedom of speech tends to draw us in.

For me, I just like to write. That is it. That was my whole reason to begin a blog. I was an English Major in college and while I never did finish that degree I still wanted to continue writing. I am not a great writer by any stretch of mental capacity. And as time goes on I find it harder to bring out my thoughts and put them down in a logical manner that would make sense to anyone. I tend to agree with those studies that have come up with the conclusions that bearing children tends to cause loss of a few brain cells.

I am one of those people that seem to be able to communicate better through writing than through the actual act of speaking. My husband tells me often that he learns more about me through my blog posts than through our every-day conversation. This tells me two things: 1) I need to learn to communicate better with my best friend and 2) I need to cultivate writing instead of letting it fester and die by the wayside. It is a sad thing when we neglect to care for those gifts God has given us.

What does any of this have to do with the title of this post? Seriously, why a new blog when I already have one? To put it quite simply: Mama Russell’s Blog is dead to me. I feel as if that woman who started that blog a couple of years ago has grown into someone a bit different. That change can not be allowed to blossom in a blog still encumbered by immature thoughts. I need to break out, to learn, to become wiser.

God has blessed me with some wonderful Titus 2 women in my church. I had not had that when I started Mama Russell’s blog. Instead I was under the mistaken impression that I had much to teach others when really I, myself, had much to be taught. Wisdom Begun will be my journey in learning what God desires to teach me. I hope to learn much from older women who have “been there done that.”

Because of this I hope that you will join me from now on over at Wisdom Begun. It is pretty bare bones at this moment and the whole template and format will eventually change. I covet any helpful links you might like to add to my sidebars. Mama Russell’s Blog will be kept alive but will feature no new posts. I look forward to this new journey!

A little bit about me

My life is filled with many blessings.  Let me list three of them and they will help describe “who I am.”

  • I am a Christian.  All of the blessings and grace I have received in this life come from my Heavenly Father.
  • I am married to a truly wonderful, godly man.  He has the funniest sense of humor.  He truly works hard without complaining for his family.  He models Christ’s servant hood on a daily basis.
  • The joy and blessing of children have been added to our family.  I have 3 daughters who are currently 5, 3, and yet to be born.  I have one son who is 22 months.

Those are three integral blessings that have shaped who I am at this moment.

Now, if I were to write you a letter introducing myself I would probably say something like this:

Dear Friend,

My name is Kelly and I am happily married to someone who truly is my best friend.  We have three lovely children and one on the way.  I am a SAHM (stay-at-home-mom).  This title involves quite a bit!  Training and discipling my children, cleaning, cooking, and homeschooling comprise a normal day in my household.

Reading is something I happily do if I have a few moments.  I read for fun as well as to expand my knowledge on various topics.  My local librarians know me quite well.

I was taught to sew clothing last year by a dear lady in my church.  This opened up a whole new love to me.  While I am not able to sew as much as I would like I do enjoy how well I “de-stress” while fashioning some new article of clothing for my daughters to wear.

Cooking and baking are two more things that interest me.  I am constantly learning healthier ways to cook and it has opened up many avenues of culinary enjoyment in our family.  Er, except for beans . . . but that is another story for another post.

Writing.  I love to write.  I am able to process my thoughts and bring them out better on paper – or computer screen – better than when I communicate verbally.  I studied as an English major during college for this various reason.  This is why I blog.  My husband tells me that when he reads my posts that he learns new things about me.

I am sure you will learn more about me as time goes on.

In His grace,

Kelly
